Genre specific blog?

I debated on whether it was necessary to upload this post or not but here it goes!

I notice that quite a few book blogs are very specific, maybe they only review YA literature, or romance novels , contemporaries etc. You may have noticed that the latest review I posted was indeed a comic book review. My next review will be a Manga I recently received for review and my review for the book The Monogram Murders should be coming out on Sunday. My point is, I created this blog without a specific genre in mind to review or a specific format ( comic book/graphic novel/ Manga) and I have decided that I want it to stay that way! I love reading, whether its books or comic books, crime thrillers or sci-fi/fantasy I pretty much enjoy reading anything!

I’m rambling again…. BASICALLY I just wanted to let my viewers know that if you do follow this blog expect reviews of anything! Once my exams are done (end of June) I will hopefully have more time to dedicate to changing the structure of my blog and making it easier to navigate to what you are interested in seeing (I understand that at this point everything is everywhere…). Thank you for understanding and choosing to follow me even though my blog may not be the best looking or the most organised, however if thee shall bear with me a little longer thee shall soon have a better blog to read! (Note the ‘thee’ is not a mistake! See, I may not be able to guarantee beautiful graphics but who else is going to be spontaneous enough to switch to Old English mid-sentence!)

*I read a Manga adaptation of The Scarlet Letter and my review should be up before the end of this week, alongside my review for The Monogram Murders!*

  1. I think this is a wonderful idea! Your blog is yours, and it should reflect what you are interested in reading. My reviews are also very ranged- I jump from classics to modern literature all the time, and it may be hard to follow in that you don’t know what I’ll post next. But it’s great that your reading list isn’t limited to a specific genre! 🙂

    1. Exactly! That’s why I made this post, I was worried that everyone would be slightly confused, I’ve been reviewing books for 4 months and now I’m also reviewing comics and Manga. You’re absolutely right! There’s so much great content out there i don’t want to limit my experience to a particular genre!

      1. I’ve only been reviewing for 2, and it’s literally all over the place haha. What can I say- I’m an explorative reader? I like testing the waters? Haha 😀 But it is definitely helpful, I think, for readers who want to try out different genres. Your reviews can help them decide!

  2. I’m so glad people agree 😅, of course if you’re someone that enjoys a specific genre that’s absolutely fine! I just sometimes get bored of reading a specific one so I like to change 😊

    1. I was just about to comment the same thing! I don’t keep to a specific genre while reading, so I’m glad there’s a blog which does the same!

  3. I think it’s great. By reviewing various genres you also broaden your ‘reading’ horizon. I always do that and I love manga!! I have thousands of them! Most of them are the old ones though.. can’t wait for your review on them!

  4. I like the variety! I’m the same way as a reader–I tend to binge read whatever topic/genre/author catches my fancy at the minute. I couldn’t maintain a genre-specific blog.

Looking forward to your upcoming reviews! 🙂

  5. This post makes me giddy. When I first started my blog not long ago I was worried about people not being interested because it isn’t genre specific. I will literally read anything that catches my eye or sounds interesting. It really all depends on my mood. I prefer to not limit myself as I would miss out on so many great books had I only read a certain genre.

    1. I absolutely agree! That’s also why I delayed making a post about it, I had to think, do I want to restrict myself from reviewing anything that isn’t YA or do I want to have a bit of a variety, because each genre brings something different to my reading experience!

  6. You do you! If you try only to read to make other people happy with your reviews, you’re just going to suck all the fun out of reading.
Which is a terrible thing to do to yourself.

  7. I love this! I try to make sure I mix up what I read all the time, never want to be a complacent reader! It’s quite fun publishing a book review and knowing that none of your followers ill be able to predict what book you’ll read and review next 🙂

  8. Dear abooknation,

Do what makes you happy! If you started this blog to write reviews that were non-genre specific, and that’s the way you want to keep it, that’s all that matters. Your readers will support you, and when you do things that make you happy, you get to be your best self. I for one, am really looking forward for your future reviews.

I’m a new follower and I’m currently going on a streak of your past posts and might I add, you are such a funny and warmhearted person!

Best of luck with your exams!

    1. This really made my day, week , month 😢. Thanks for checking out my blog and for the follow! Thank you so much 😊 (As you can probably tell I’m not the best at conveying my emotions, unless it’s about a book 😅)

  9. We started our blog as genre specific, YA, though that leaves a lot of wiggle room. Okay of our thought process was that a LOT of the books we read do got in that category, though not all. Also, as adults, we sometimes have a different take than younger readers might; or we might fill a gap for parents who don’t necessarily want to read YA.
Additionally, as a big fan of Knitting podcasts, I’ve discovered that I generally prefer blogs/podcasts/etc. With a focus and a voice rather than one who jumps around or floats through topics. I think there is room out there for all sorts of different content because there are so many different audiences.

    1. I completely understand that, but I’m just very flexible with what I enjoy, even in music I listen to pretty much all the genres 😅. At different times during the year I favour reading a particular genre or maybe sometimes I’ll read a book from each genre within one month. It just keeps me interested in reading because whenever I feel tired of a genre I can always find another that I enjoy just as much ( I don’t even know if that made sense 😅)

      1. Of course! 🙂 I enjoyed reading a few of your posts and some of the comments on this post in particular. At the same time, I wanted to speak to the other side of the equation on why someone might consider hosting only a single genre.

  10. I love it! Keep all the genres. I always get asked my favorite books and I can’t give one. Why? Because if a book is decently written and has a well-paced plot, I can enjoy it! Sometimes I enjoy the simplicity of YA fiction, other times I want something more indepth like Jane Austen. Maybe I’m in a sci-fi mood, maybe I want non-fiction. There are so many wonderful books that exist, why limit yourself just because it doesn’t fall into a certain category?

  11. I’ve run into the same problem after launching my blog, Deelightful Days. While my blog is not exclusive to book reviews, I was debating on whether or not I should focus on one specific genre in terms of the book review component of my blog.

However, the more I thought about it, I realized that I don’t read one specific genre, and if I limited myself to one (i.e. manga, YA fiction, comics, etc.), reading would feel like a chore, and I would eventually despite the genre because I gave myself no other options. Therefore, I’ve decided to just review what I read, which I think makes your blog even more unique! I think it also helps in terms of building a relationship with your readers because they begin to trust your opinion and not the genre, which helps lead them to new books that they would have never considered reading before!

Also, thank you so much for liking my book review of Brooklyn and taking the time to read it. I hope you enjoyed it! I’m new to the blogging world and it’s always great to get feedback from readers, as well as advice from a fellow blogger. Any tips or feedback you’d be willing to give me? Feel free to follow me if you’d like! I’ll be posting new books reviews weekly.

    Again, thanks for reading! 🙂

  12. Firstly, thank you for the like on one of my posts :). Just like you, I also review books that I’ve read so far.

I think that book review blogs are already genre specific enough. To narrow it down some more may also narrow down your potential readers. If variety suits you, then go for it. Part of the fun of reviewing books is reading. If you can’t enjoy what you’re reading, it’s going to be hard writing that review.

  13. I love your blog!! I enjoy reading your reviews because they are so varied. I prefer to do YA because that’s been my mood but I’m def not against expanding if there are more adult books I find interest in. Plus with a three year old reading YA goes.much quicker hahaha. Keep on reading what you like!!!
