This was the first manga I’ve read and I LOVED it! It was an adaptation of The Scarlet Letter from a series of Manga adaptations of classics including an adaptation of Pride and Prejudice which I really want to read!
From the illustrations to the dialogue to the small details that are hidden within the art you only notice after they are outlined at the end of the copy I received I enjoyed reading this so much and it has really sparked an interest in manga for me. I have never read the original classic, The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne so I didn’t really know about the issues it dealt with until after reading the manga. It’s also quite a dense story with a lot of emotional scenes and engaging characters and I think the illustrations really helped enhance this experience! There were some scenes without even any dialogue and they still managed to make me feel some type of way. The way this manga was structured, the dialogue and the narration made it incredibly easy to follow the story and I genuinely think that this adaptation has fully encompassed the original classic even though I haven’t even read it yet!
The way they went about this adaptation was so simple yet if you dug a little deeper you would explore the complexity of each of these characters and you would find a lot of little details that under any other circumstances you wouldn’t pay much attention to. Within the short span of this adaptation you could see the development of each of our characters and also the development of the relationships. Again I haven’t read the original classic but I found that the dialogue was powerful, engaging and I honestly couldn’t put this down once I started reading it!
If you’ve never read manga, or you’ve read The Scarlet Letter and would be interested in seeing a strong adaptation of the story I HIGHLY recommend you check this out! I CANNOT wait to read the Pride and Prejudice adaption!!!!

I feel like I would have finished this book in high school if it would have been in manga form.
Probably still wouldn’t have LIKED it, but might have finished at least.

I guess if you did have to do an assignment for it and you wanted the GENERAL picture this would’ve helped 😅, why didn’t you like it?

I hated all the chatacters. I didn’t find even one of them that was relatable enough to make me want to keep going.

Ohhh that’s interesting, I haven’t read the classic so I can’t really say much but I loved the way the characters were portrayed in this Manga

If you love classics I strongly recommend you read this! Even if you don’t they add something to original classics and make them more readable for people who may not necessarily enjoy reading classics!

I read the classic book in school and I really liked the book. I didn’t know there was manga of it. I’ll have to add this to my book list.

This seems like a really great way for high school students to actually read the books their teachers set, haha. I love this creative approach to telling what I believe is quite a dense classic (tbh I haven’t read it). Other than this the only thing I know about The Scarlet Letter is Easy A. It’s a great movie but I’m guessing it doesn’t have a whole lot to do with the original novel.
I’ve seen quite a lot of Shakespeare plays written in this format too. Your enthusiasm about this makes me want to check them out even more than I did already.

It’s funny you should mention Shakespeare because just the other day I went to a local charity shop and found they had manga adaptations of Hamlet and The Tempest 😅 and of course had to pick them up! I completely agree with you, the manga may actually make the reader want to give the classic a chance! Especially as you said so many classics contain dense topics and take a bit more time/effort to read, so this can give the reader a head start. I can’t wait to read the Pride and Prejudice one! 😊😊

Enjoy the Shakespeare! I could have seriously used these when I was doing my degree. It might have made getting through my Shakespeare module a lot easier.

I LOVE The Scarlet Letter. I don’t really like Manga art, but I might need to check this out anyway. Marvel also has a series of classics drawn as comics, which are amazing!

No problem! Any new way to absorb Pride and Prejudice is always a good idea. That was one of the first of the Marvel Classics I read.

This sounds like a lot of fun! I studied the Scarlet Letter in school and sort of don’t remember it at all so this might be a good way to actually read it again. If you’re liking manga do add Death Note to your list.
